Here we are, as they say, on Finibus Terrae. Enjoy your first impressions of this wonderful area: shimmering silver-green olive trees, lush oleander bushes and wild prickly pears. In the middle you can always see the dry stone walls typical of Puglia. The view extends over the terraced slopes towards the infinite sea, where beautiful Mediterranean summer villas and characteristic pajars have found their place. The dry heat, the sea breeze and the splendid view create the right holiday feeling. Driving around in an open convertible now would be perfect! Now, when you turn on the radio, you will be amazed to hear Greek and Albanian music. And here, at the southern tip of Puglia, in some places you suddenly find yourself in the cellular network of your Greek neighbors… almost unorthodox, but we're not that far away…!
Marina di Corsano – a scenic paradise
The peculiarity of Corsano, or rather Marina di Corsano, is the breathtaking landscape. The ideal address for those who want to discover nature. A fantastic scenario opens up before you: the natural rocky coast, the fragrant Mediterranean scrub, wild plants and herbs, wonderful pine trees and holm oaks. But bushes of wild fennel and capers also grow here. The ideal scenario is made up of the various sea caves, which can be visited during boat excursions.
The sea caves are found in particular between the districts of Scalamasciu and Funnovojere. In the Middle Ages and early modern age this stretch was crossed by the Salt Road.
Funnovojere is a small, almost hidden seaside resort that is part of the municipality of Marina di Corsano. From the upper coastal road, winding spur paths descend to the crystal-clear Adriatic sea. Truly uncontaminated nature awaits you amidst wonderful vegetation. In the middle you can discover, almost hidden, the idyllic Pajare, the stone houses typical of Salento, which fit harmoniously into the landscape. Of course you can also rent them for your holidays. They are authentic, evocative and will allow you to experience unforgettable holidays in Puglia. The steep green rocky slope descends directly into the sea. Enjoy this breathtaking view in the Otranto Coast Natural Park – Santa Maria di Leuca Nature Reserve and Tricase Woods. You can enjoy a relaxing holiday in Marina di Corsano, away from the hustle and bustle.
Corsano and surroundings
Corsano is about 59 km from Lecce and has about 5,000 inhabitants. The origins of Corsano date back to the 10th century AD, when it was under Byzantine rule. Contemporary evidence of their presence is not only found in the buildings, but also in the coins of the Eastern Roman Empire and in the tombs found here. Greek religious rites were also widespread in the area until the 14th century thanks to the monks present in the area. Corsano in fact has two patron saints who come from the East: San Biagio and Santa Sofia.
In Piazza Umberto I in Corsano you will find the Capece Baronial Castle, built around the 17th century. Until the end of the 1980s it functioned as a tobacco warehouse; today the fort is, so to speak, abandoned to its fate. The beautiful church of Santa Sofia, however, was restored a few years ago and proudly presents itself with its frescoes in their ancient splendor.
Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Adriatic Sea meets the Ionian Sea, is just a short walk away. It is the southernmost viewpoint in Puglia. (The municipality is actually called Gagliano del Capo). You can walk along the beautiful seafront with a view of the magnificent Art Nouveau villas. There is also a large port here. Santa Maria di Leuca is also a place of pilgrimage. The Basilica Santa Maria De Finibus Terrae is just outside, on a rocky spur overlooking the sea, next to the lighthouse.
