A little away from the tourist crowds you can discover San Vito dei Normanni, a small town between Bari and Brindisi with around 20,000 inhabitants. It is just 9 km from the Adriatic coast.

Le origini della città sono contraddittorie. Alcuni storici parlano dell’età del bronzo sulla base di vari ritrovamenti archeologici nella zona vicina, mentre altri ipotizzano che la città sia stata fondata dai Normanni nei secoli XI e XII. In questo contesto si parla in particolare di Boemondo d’Altavilla (1050 – 1111), che inizialmente fece costruire la torre quadrata a San Vito dei Normanni. Intorno alla torre si sviluppò il borgo, originariamente chiamato degli Schiavoni perché la zona allora era popolata da slavi. A causa delle numerose foreste e della fauna selvatica che esistevano all’epoca, si ritiene che un tempo la torre fungesse da rifugio di caccia. Attorno alla torre venne edificato il palazzo feudale medievale Dentice di Frasso, che si può ammirare nella piazza principale di San Vito dei Normanni, di fronte al municipio. In città non mancano le chiese storiche. La più importante per i Sanviti è la Basilica di Santa Maria della Vittoria, detta anche Chiesa Madre.

Nel centro storico si svolge ogni anno la popolare Estate Sanvitese. In estate i visitatori e la gente del posto possono aspettarsi eventi culturali e musicali organizzati dal comune direttamente o con il suo patrocinio. (La visita è gratuita). Arte, cinema e giochi per bambini fanno parte del variegato programma di intrattenimento, ma anche conferenze letterarie e le tipiche Sagre, le tradizionali feste folcloristiche. Non dovrebbe mancare in agenda il Barocco Festival, rassegna di musica barocca organizzata annualmente in onore del compositore sanvitese dei Normanni Leonardo Leo. La festa patronale in onore dei santi San Vito Martiri e San Vincenzo Ferreri si svolge sempre nel secondo fine settimana di luglio. Nel centro storico illuminato a festa si svolgono in occasione di questa festa processioni, concerti, caroselli per bambini, trambusto colorato e fuochi d’artificio.
What to do in San Vito dei Normanni and surroundings
Like the neighboring municipalities, San Vito dei Normanni also has its Villa Comunale, a centrally located park which is, so to speak, the green lung of the city. Enjoy a short walk in the "pine forest", as it is also called simply for its numerous pine trees; But numerous palm trees and oak trees can also be seen in the park. Every Monday morning is market day in the center of San Vito. Here, sun-ripened fruit, the best locally grown vegetables and salads and other products are offered for sale. Worth seeing is the Museum of Rural Civilisation, which features agricultural tools, other crafts and everyday objects from the 18th century onwards.
The idyllic hinterland of San Vito dei Normanni (towards the nearby communities of San Michele Salentino, Ostuni and Latiano) is characterized by extensive olive groves, fruit, vegetable and wine cultivations, and the characteristic trulli (which can also be rented for holidays) and the picturesque ancient farms.
A special travel tip that takes you very close to San Vito dei Normanni to the coast: the Torre Guaceto oasis, located about 18 km north of Brindisi, a nature reserve that extends over an area of over 1,000 hectares . Torre Guaceto is recognizable from afar thanks to the completely independent Aragonese defense tower of the same name from 1440. In Torre Guaceto there are beautiful bathing bays of fine sand, flanked by dunes and fragrant Mediterranean scrub bushes, wild Mediterranean herbs. The nature reserve is divided into a marine protected area and a wetland and is under the protection of the WWF.
By the way: since 1992 San Vito dei Normanni has also had a twinned city with Germany, Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt.
