From Lecce to Castro it is almost 50 km and from Otranto only 15 km. Approaching Castro, also known as the "Pearl of Salento", a fantastic scenario opens up. Castro, the medieval village
The town is divided into Castro Marina on the sea and Castro Alta with the historic center perched on the rock overlooking the sea. Castro is of Roman origin. Its name comes from Latin and means fortress. Castro was initially inhabited by the Messapi and was then conquered in 123 BC. BC to the Roman colony called Castrum Minervae, cited in the literary traditions of the poet Virgil. It is said that a temple was built there in honor of the goddess Minerva. In the newly designed local Archaeological Museum there is, among other things, a marble statue of Minerva. There are numerous contemporary testimonies that indicate that Castro was an important maritime city or commercial base in antiquity. The ancient Aragonese castle, which dominates about 100 m above the sea, dates back to the 12th-15th centuries. Century back. It has 4 towers, the tallest of which is called the Knight's Tower. From the castle you have a splendid view of the sea, both to the north towards Santa Cesarea Terme, and to the south with a view of Andrano and Tricase. A few steps from the castle is the Castro Cathedral. It was built in 1171, probably on the remains of an ancient Greek temple. Outside you can also see the remains of an ancient Byzantine basilica.
Castro with its beaches and caves
From up here a path descends to Castro Marina. Castro was awarded the Blue Flag, the so-called Blue Flag, for the excellent quality of the sea water. Castro, with its rugged coastline, is also considered a diver's paradise. The coast is lined with numerous natural caves. The most famous of these, not only in Castro, but throughout Salento, is the Zinzulusa Cave. The name derives from the word “Zinzuli” in Salento dialect. The cave takes its name from the numerous stalactites and stalagmites that hang like clothes on the line. The imposing cave can be visited with a guide and on small boat trips. There are also the Palombara and Rotundella caves, which can also be visited by boat during the season.
