Ostuni is not far from the Itria Valley, but is already part of Alto Salento. If planning your holiday in Puglia allows it, I would not only recommend a short detour to Ostuni, but I would also choose a nice holiday home here. Whether in the picturesque historic center or on the wonderful coast (Marina di Ostuni), just 6 km away, where Mediterranean holiday homes with flowering gardens and holiday apartments with sea views line up, Ostuni is always an attractive destination, as is the its green, idyllic surroundings with countless plantations of olive trees, wild prickly pears and dry stone walls here and there. Thanks to its geographical position, Ostuni is also ideal for discovering the other beauties of Puglia.
Ostuni – the White City
The White City is located 300 m above sea level. The Moorish-looking Ostuni with its white houses, labyrinthine alleys and its almost perfectly preserved historic center exudes an indescribable charm. During the day it shines in the sunlight, in the evening it is illuminated and conveys an almost magical atmosphere. Ostuni resembles an oriental Kasbah and can officially define itself as an Italian city of art. Between Ostuni and the sea, sparkling silver-green olive groves as far as the eye can see. In the alleys of the picturesque historic center you will find – in addition to countless churches – restaurants and bars where you can sit outdoors; small boutiques and souvenir shops. The historic center is particularly busy in the summer months. The historic center is truly in bloom. Both locals and tourists stroll through the streets, up to the cathedral, sit in one of the ice cream parlors and listen to music somewhere in the distance. Perhaps a group with people from Ostuni is spontaneously improvising a Salento pizzica somewhere, or there is a live outdoor concert taking place at the Foro Boario under the curtain walls.
Summer in Ostuni
Especially in summer, the city organizes a series of events every year as part of the Ostuni Summer, such as colorful folklore evenings in the Villa Comunale, in the city park, classical music concerts in the square in front of the Town Hall, and sometimes a fashion show, antiques Fair. The summer events also include the Sagra dei Vecchi Tempi, which winds along the ancient 16th century curtain wall. The festival is characterized by characteristic shows and dances; Stalls selling Apulian products such as sun-ripened olive oil, full-bodied wines and delicious limoncello. Here and there you can taste homemade specialties and admire the practice of traditional crafts of the past. Every year on August 26th the feast of Sant'Oronzo takes place, which is celebrated in honor of the patron saint Sant'Oronzo, who freed the city from the plague in the 17th century. The equestrian parade with beautifully decorated horses is definitely worth a visit.
